Courtney Love Told Cobain And Grohl That ‘In Bloom’ Is A Better First Single Than ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

-Nirvana released their iconic ‘Nevermind’ album one year before Love and Cobain’s marriage. The band recorded the album in May and June 1991 at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California. During that time, Love was living nearby. Following ‘Nevermind’s release, she was there with Cobain, and they both enjoyed the album’s commercial success.

Although the Hole singer hasn’t talked about the ‘Nevermind’ album before, she recently gave an interview to Los Angeles Times and recalled those times. In the interview, Courtney Love revealed that she argued to Cobain and Dave, claiming that ‘In Bloom’ was a better first single for the album than ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ Love said that ‘In Bloom’ had no shtick while ‘Teen Spirit’ has a little of a K Records shtick.

Following that, she said that if ‘In Bloom’ was the album’s first single, things might have been different now. Love noted that Kurt Cobain might still be alive now if they had taken her idea into consideration, as someone like Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder would have handled the popularity and fame better than Kurt.

The Los Angeles Times interviewer asked Courtney Love:

“Did you argue to Kurt, Krist, and Dave directly that ‘In Bloom’ was a better first single than ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit?'”

Love then answered:

“I did. Life would have turned out simpler and better had I been heard. ‘In Bloom’ had no shtick. Although that drum fill is fantastic in ‘Teen Spirit,’ there was a little of a K Records shtick. I recently saw the lyric ‘Who will be the king and queen of the outcasted teens’ and there was a bit of the K Records vibe to that too. I am really fond of the ‘outcasted teens’ line, and I found his bad grammar, like my own, fetching.

I’m not really a fan of the idea that it all ‘could have’ been that different, but ‘In Bloom’ might have shifted things. He might have survived had somebody else gone first. Like Eddie Vedder, somebody who had good infrastructure.”

Nirvana’s classic album ‘Nevermind’ was released 30 years ago on September 24. To celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary, a new edition of the album will be released in November.
